Activities abound at the New Beacon and boys are encouraged to participate fully. Some activities are available all year round, whereas many of the sporting themes are season driven. All outside personnel are qualified to instruct their respective activity and are fully checked.
This an after school activity on Thursday for those who wish to complete work or to take projects to a higher level.Those intending to take an Art scholarship should be attending these extra sessions too.
Chess is taught by a Grand Master in the Library as an after school activity every Monday. Sessions last for fifty minutes and appeal to all levels of ability.
Training for Y3-4 occurs on Wednesday before school 8am - 8.20am. The session is open to all willing and enthusiastic pupils with the aim being personal improvement over a flat, lapped 1000m course. There is also a session for Y5-8 on Tuesday during break time.
The school participates in a number of Cross-Country matches and also competes at County and Regional level. There is no cost.
Design and Technology
DT Club is an after school club on Tuesday for Y6-8 where individual skills may be progressed or a project undertaken which is different from the class-based one. For those considering a DT scholarship, this is a must.
The Drama activity takes place on Thursday after school. It is aimed at those in Y6-8 looking to take an interest in stagecraft further and those who intend to take a Drama scholarship to their senior school.
Fencing is primarily an after-school club on Tuesday, though some individual instruction may take place at other times by arrangement. All equipment is provided. There is a session for Y4 and then one for Y5-8.
Tuition in ancient Greek takes place as an after school club on Monday. The sessions are aimed at all abilities from the beginner to the near fluent for Y6-8 pupils.
Judo is an after-school activity that takes place on Friday in the Sports Hall. There are 3 sessions for Y3, Y4 and Y5-6.
LCM Drama/Musical Theatre
These lessons take place during the day in which boys can try their hand at Public Speaking, Mime, Acting, Verse and Prose, Musical Theatre and more. Y2-8, on Tuesday or Wednesday, times various.
Model making takes place after school on Tuesday for Y5 pupils. It is perfect for beginners or experts and kits can be provided, or brought along by the individual.
Sailing takes place on Chipstead Lakes on Monday and Friday from 4.00pm - 8.00pm during the Autumn and Summer terms. Instruction is provided under the auspices of Chipstead SC. It accommodates all levels of ability in a fleet of Toppers and RS Teras. Opportunities exist to participate in competitive regattas, suited to each boy's sailing level.
Shooting takes place for Y6-8 pupils under strictly controlled conditions in our own range during school hours. Participants are allocated a specific time slot and are expected to keep to that time each Tuesday and Friday
Training in the school pool takes place after school for all-comers, with two extra sessions for squad swimmers by invitation only.
Weekly sessions of table tennis for Y5-6 take place in the Sports Hall on Monday after school. All equipment is provided.
Tennis is taught by a professional coach. Lessons take place for Y3-8 at lunch time from Monday - Friday.
Touch typing is an important skill and this will take place in the ICT Suite in the Technology Block. On Tuesday Y5-6 this session is open to all in Y5-6.
