| Around 125 people came to wine, dine and dance at the New Beacon Après Ski Spring Event. With the sports hall transformed into a candlelit chalet, party goers were greeted with vin chaud to warm up the spring night. Dinner was a lively affair with music from DJ Sean serenading the three course meal. We were treated to a charcuterie platter followed by tartiflette with sausages, and rounded off with tarte tatin (or fruit salad for the healthier amongst us!). Coffee and chocolates followed as the dancing kicked off and DJ Sean swung into action. Music from across the decades filled the hall and we danced the night away to tunes from The Black Eyed Peas to Lady Gaga and many more. The gift tree proved very popular and there were many smiles as the beautifully wrapped secret presents were opened. A big thanks to everyone involved in organising the event and to those who came and made it the fun night it was! |

“ To the nearest 1,000 years how old is Stonehenge?” And so began the 2009 quiz. It was a full house with 24 tables and around 190 people, battling their way through nine rounds of questions. The first round, general knowledge, proved very testing with many of us hoping that this did not set the tone for the rest of the evening! It was in fact the lowest scoring round of the evening with an average score of 3 out of a possible 10 (or 20 if the joker was played). Scores improved significantly with the second round, the 11+ round. Many jokers were played and a collective sigh of relief was felt through the sports hall as confidence in our knowledge was restored. Other rounds were geography, art language and literature, wine, connections and cult fiction. We enjoyed fish and chips whilst trying to name famous people with a range of different initials (GB, MP, EE, etc.) This round was the highest scoring of all with many tables getting maximum points. The wine round and sports round were very challenging whilst the cult fiction round provided some nostalgia as we identified theme tunes from Charlie’s Angels and Grange Hill amongst others. This year’s winners were the Knipe table aka the ‘Teachers’ table with a score of 79 points. In second place were the O’Sullivan table with 76 points and in joint third the Bull table and the Dobson table with 75 points each. Congratulations to all the winners. Special mention goes to the parents of class 6C who came second and third in the quiz. It was also very reassuring and worth noting that the teachers table achieved the maximum points for the 11+ round! Special thanks also to Mr and Mrs Piercy who set questions for quiz, the markers (who were not the least bit bribable) and the NBPA who set up the event. And of course a big thanks to all the parents, teachers and friends of The New Beacon who participated and made the evening very enjoyable and successful. (For all those who are interested, the average score for the quiz was 65 points and the answer to the first question is 5,000 years!) |
