ScienceYears 5,6,7 and 8 DESIGN A POSTER for The New Beacon Science Week 2010 Poster Competition. Our themes are Earth: Fire & Ice and 2010: International Year of Biodiversity. Dates: March 16th - 23rd RESEARCH and choose one of the themes. On a plain piece of A4 produce a bright, clear advert for Our week. Computer, hand drawn and 3D posters are all acceptable. There will be winners in each Year and all entries will be displayed around the School in the lead up to Science Week. Completed posters should be handed into Mr. McCarthy. Year 6, 7 and 8 (Year 5 too if you want to!) 'FIRE & ICE' EXPERIMENT You need: Three Bowls Pour cold water into one bowl, hot water into another and lukewarm water into a third. Safety First: Be careful not to use water that is so hot you scald yourself! Dunk one hand into the cold water and the other into the hot water and leave them for a minute or two. Put both hands together into the lukewarm bowl. What do you feel? PREPARE a short write up of experience in the BACK of your science jotters. Include an appropriate title, apparatus drawing, fair test considerations, method, risk assessment, observation and your thoughts on why this feels the way it does. Year 7 only RESEARCH the differences between ELEMENTS, MIXTURES AND COMPOUNDS. Choose an ELEMENT from the Periodic Table of Elements and PRODUCE AN A4 POSTER FOR DISPLAY about your chosen element. Consider its properties and practical uses. Include important information about your element. For example: Iron. Chemical Symbol: Fe Properties: A common metal, strong and relatively cheap to produce. It oxidises (rusts) easily so needs to be protected. Uses: Construction, magnets So, your poster should include this information clearly and brightly. Either computer or hand drawn posters are acceptable. Hand in via your work pigeon hole in the Entrance Area as usual. Year 8 only LEARN the symbols and functions of the circuit components on page 13 of the Electricity & Magnetism Unit (You will be formally tested on these upon your return). RESEARCH the importance of fuses in everyday circuitry. COMPLETE the Resistors and Fuses worksheet on page 12 of the Electricity & Magnetism Unit. READ page 14 of the Electricity & Magnetism Unit do any further research you feel necessary. COMPLETE the Magnetism worksheet on page 15 of the Electricity & Magnetism Unit. The CEQ's A-I at the back of the Unit will be also be a test. DO NOT WRITE on the sheets yet but you may prepare yourself to answer the questions in advance. The standard of answer expected will be higher as a result. |
