After many years of visiting the military cemetery at Etaples, we recently discovered that one of our old boys was buried there.
This year, the Year 8 boys visited the grave of 2nd Lieutenant Royden Spencer Bayspool Porter and left a plaque ‘in memorium’.
Royden Porter attended the New Beacon from the autumn of 1901 until the summer of 1904, when he left for Marlborough College.
He was a 2nd lieutenant in The Honourable Artillery Company (Infantry division) and died on the 6th of February 1917 in the Duchess of Westminster’s Military Hospital, in Le Touquet. As part of the 2nd battalion, it is likely he was wounded, possibly at Beaumont Hamel on 30th of November 1916, and transferred to the military hospital where he later died.
