Today is Chinese New Year. Chinese New Year is the most important holiday in China.
The Chinese zodiac features 12 animal signs in this order: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. In Chinese astrology, each year is named after an animal, and if you are born in that year, it is believed that you take on some of that animal’s characteristics.
This week Mrs Alteirac asked the PP/JS boys to find their Chinese zodiac animals and to see if they took on any characteristics of that animal. She has had some lovely entries from snakes, goats, horses and dragons!
Mrs Ren, who runs our Mandarin Club, told us about some Chinese New Year traditions in our assemblies this week. Charles (4GH) played ‘Blue and White Porcelain’ on a traditional Chinese instrument called a hulusi. Charlie (3AH) and Charles both recited New Year’s poems in Chinese and Muge (5B) and Ouge (8B) put together a lovely video about Chinese couplets.
Wishing everyone a very Happy Year of the Ox.
