On Sunday, our New Beacon squad of 16 rugby players gathered to play in the annual Tonbridge Rugby Festival. The 3 matches in which we played were keenly contested and all of the squad got a fair amount of game time, some, however, slightly less than others due to injuries. We competed against Yardley Court, St Thomas’s (Clapham) and Northcote Lodge.

The first match against Yardley Court was a match in which we didn’t dominate all aspects of the game, but we still did enough to win convincingly in the end. We rested a few stalwarts for the next match against St Thomas’s and even though we lost this by three tries to two, the boys played some scintillating rugby. But for a few defensive lapses we could well have one. One also needs to take into account that St Thomas’s have played many more matches than us. No excuses though, as the spectators were entertained to a good encounter with both teams giving it their all.

By the time we played our last match against Northcote Lodge who had also enjoyed many more fixtures prior to the festival than us, our squad had suffered quite a few injuries and we were down to 11. Tiredness also took its toll and we were well beaten in the end.

My thanks go to all of the squad members as well as to the super support given to the boys by the New Beacon parents on the touchline.
