On Thursday 19 May, Year 6 will be going across to the Haysden Country Park in Tonbridge for a short Geography field trip. We shall be leaving school at 9.15am and returning in time for games. The theme of this field trip is to follow up river studies, land-use and flooding, together with an element of ecology.
The journey: We shall leave school by coach and walk from Tonbridge School (leisure) Centre across country mostly via local footpaths, bypassing the former powder mill site, ending up at Haysden Country Park, a distance of 7 km in total. Along the way, the boys will be reading maps to help find our way, they shall plot land use and determine the siting factors for the former gunpowder factory. Moreover, they will see at first hand some of the OS map symbols in situ, e.g. an embankment.
At the Leigh flood barrier: We shall view the barrier constructed to prevent Tonbridge experiencing such damaging floods as in the 1980s and, of course, more recently back in December 2013. In Haysden Country Park the boys will learn about the rationale for such a form of landscape protection and see what measures have been implemented therein. They shall also undertake a short biological investigation exercise.
At the end of a very full few hours, we shall be transported back to school in time for games.
