Last Saturday, six boys from Year 3 and 4, took part in the IAPS U8 and U9 Judo competition, a first for New Beacon boys.
This was their first proper competition, against unknown opposition, although some boys recognised others from sports they practise outside school.

Three of the boys were in the Under 38kg category, (Teddy A. and Milo G-D from Y3, and Onize B. from Y4), William L. (Y3) was in the Under 27kg, Freddie M. (Y3) in Under 34kg, and Arron Z. (Y4) in the Under 42kg.

All gave 100% in what is truly a test of physical and mental resilience, as well as fitness, and of course judo technique.  The going was very competitive and there were several bruising encounters, with the St John’s ambulance team on hand with ice packs and soothing words to help the boys deal with bumps and bruises. The boys now know why I keep saying in class that judo is definitely not a cuddly sport!

The New Beacon boys in the U38 and U34 narrowly missed out on medals, and they should all be extremely proud of their performance on Saturday – I certainly am!

The photo is of Arron who remained calm & focused whilst being the sole representative of the school in his weight category but who kept going and won himself a very well-deserved bronze medal. Well done Arron!
