Welcome back to the start of the new academic year. I hope that you have all had a wonderful summer break. For those who enjoyed a staycation, is not it just so typical that the sweltering heat accompanies the start of the term.
The boys are beginning to settle down in their new forms and the buzz around the campus is amazing. The Year 8 boys have already been asking about meeting with their Reception Buddies. It is good to be back!
I sincerely hope that all our new boys have got off to a good start and that they will enjoy their time at The New Beacon. I will endeavour to meet with them over the next few days to find out how they are coping. New parents do not hesitate to contact myself or your son’s form teacher should you require any further assistance.
Here are a few notices that you should be aware of: –
A reminder that boarding is available for all boys from Year 5 – 8. Boys can board from 1 – 4 nights. In the evenings they have a choice of activities ranging from swimming, sports, films, Lego and board games. Prep is included in the evening programme.
If you would like to know more or would like to book a taster session for your child, please contact our Houseparent, Mrs Buckner email@example.com
We are now able to extend the prep session for Senior School boys to 5.20pm. Boys should be collected from outside the NBC at this time. If not collected by 5.30pm, they will be accompanied by the staff member on duty to the After School Club.
Swimming Squad Trials – Wednesday, 13 September
Mrs Bridgeman and Mrs Leeson will be running a trial for swim squad. Any boy that has already been in swim squad does not need to re-trial; they already have a place. The trial is for any new boys who wish to try out.
Your child will need to be able to swim at least two lengths of front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke and have a basic butterfly stroke. We will be looking at technique for all strokes as well as stamina and speed.
If your child would like to trial, please email firstname.lastname@example.org to book your place. Parents pick up from the pool at 5:15pm, please.
Y7 Paris Trip – June 2024
Year 7 boys are being offered the exciting opportunity to visit Paris in June 2024, as part of their French studies. Please click this link to read more details and to find out how to reserve your son’s place on the trip.
Guidance for Parents from the Music Department
Dr Maslin (Director of Music) asks that parents read about music lessons and musical activities following this link
Looking ahead to next week, you are invited to an information evening on Tuesday 12 September for Year 7 and Thursday, 14 September for Year 8 parents in The Studio, where we will be forwarding details for the year ahead. Both information evenings are for parents only and will start at 7.00pm.
Year 7 and 8 will have some study skills sessions this term with Elevate Education. Elevate are offering some free webinars for parents: https://get.elevatecoaching.info/uk/schoolwebinar
Senior School Chapel
Year 7 and 8 boys are expected to all attend our chapel services on a Friday evening. Parents are very welcome to attend.
If your son is not able to attend the service for a legitimate reason, please email Mrs Brownsdon and not the form teacher.
Senior School Football Season
With the arrival of our new Director of Sport, Mr Herbert, delayed until January, Messrs Young, Bromwich and I will be dealing with any administration relating to football fixtures in the interim.
If your son is unable to participate in any training sessions or a match due to injury, please do email his coach and you may also copy me into the email.
Fixtures commence for the senior teams on Wednesday, 13 September with 4 matches at home to DPS Cranbrook. Parents are most welcome to attend these matches and then to enjoy a match tea in The Studio in the NBC. Good luck boys!
Early Warning – Individual and Sibling Photographs – Monday, 18 September
This takes place in The Studio in the NBC and we request your son wears his blazer to school on this day. He will sit for the photograph wearing his blazer, but no jumper. More about this will be posted next Friday.
Activities start Monday (11 September) apart from Years 7 and 8 Reasoning and The New Beacon Rifle Club with Mr Prongue, will start the following week. The collection point for Senior School clubs will be from outside the NBC.
Advanced warning, for those in the Chess activity; Mr Emms has been selected for England and will be away on the 18 and 25 September. Boys should therefore be collected at the normal time or they can go to prep.
Office 365 Passwords
Over the summer several updates were rolled out which have affected the boys’ access to Office 365. The main upside of this is that they should be able to access any piece of work completed and saved in lessons at home through their OneDrive app on Office 365. It also means that their password for Office 365 has changed, thus becoming the same password they use to log in to the school network. Your son should know this, but if he is unsure, please email Mr O’Prey for further assistance. The boys’ email addresses should remain unchanged.
Morning Drop off and Pick Up Times for Senior School
Morning: Years 7 and 8 – 8.10am to 8.30am (NBC)
Afternoon: 4.30pm every day from NBC – on Chapel Days they are 5.20pm; choristers from Music Block and everyone else to be collected from the NBC.
Year 8 Battlefields Trip to Ypres
Mr Vincent will be sending the final details by email for the trip in October.
