Well done to all the boys (and parents!) for making it successfully through the first full week of term. We have still been blessed with beautiful weather and a slight drop in temperature has made things even more pleasant.

The Middle School has been a buzz of excitement as the new activities programme got under way and the boys tried out a variety of clubs. This week has also brought our first sporting fixtures of the year and we have been pleased to see the boys have been enthusiastic on the pitch and demonstrated good sportsmanship, regardless of the final score.

As the term begins to pick up speed there are lots of notices and reminders below, so please do have a read to ensure you do not miss any important information.

Individual and Sibling Photographs – Monday, 18 September

These will take place in The Studio in the NBC and we request your son wears his blazer to school on this day. He will sit for the photograph wearing his blazer, but no jumper. More about this will be posted next Friday.

Y5 and Y6 Parent Information Evenings

A reminder for Middle School parents: all Y5 parents are warmly invited to an information evening on Tuesday, 19 September (7:00pm) in the Studio, where we will be sharing details of the year ahead as well as imparting important information regarding senior school selections and guidance. A Y6 Parent Information Evening follows on Thursday 21 September – time and location as above – where Y6 parents will be informed of the year ahead, and we will also be going over the finer details of the ISEB tests which many boys will be taking in mid-November. A reminder that both information evenings are for parents only – please ensure arrangements are made for the care of your sons if you are attending these meetings.

Break Time Snacks

A reminder that breaktime snacks should be healthy options.  Please also remember that these snacks and any other food/drink brought into school should not contain any nuts.

Matches and the sports calendar.

A reminder that all sport and match-related information can be found on the sports section of the school website. On occasions, there may be slight changes to the sporting calendar and therefore we ask that parents check the sports pages regularly. Parents are always welcome (in fact encouraged!) to come along and support their sons during fixtures.

For the Autumn Term (football) a reminder of kit needed for Middle School boys:

  • red/blue reversible top
  • blue shorts
  • long blue socks
  • shin pads
  • football boots
  • trainers/astro boots (in case of inclement weather)
  • water bottles
  • full New Beacon tracksuits for colder weather

Y6 PGL trip – Summer Term 2024

Year 6 PGL residential trip to Windmill Hill, East Sussex – Monday, 24 June 2024  – Wednesday, 26 June 2024

A final reminder that if your son is unable to attend this trip then you must inform Mr Woodard (alex.woodard@newbeacon.org.uk) directly by next Thursday, 21 September. If we do not hear from you by then, we will assume your son will be attending and you will be charged accordingly. A letter will be going out shortly with details about the trip but if you have any questions in the meantime, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

School Council Form Representatives

In keeping with the Democracy strand of British Values, we will be holding elections to our School Council next week. Boys in Year 5 to Year 7 will have the opportunity to stand for election as Form Representatives. Boys will need to let their form teacher know if they are interested in standing. In Form Period next Tuesday, they will speak to their class, explaining why they should be elected and their classmates will then cast their votes in the election on Friday morning. Year 8 candidates will speak at a hustings in front of the Middle and Senior School, next Friday morning, before the boys from these two Sections cast their votes. Election results will be announced by The New Beacon Returning Officer, J. Vincent, Esq. during Friday lunchtime.

In Year 8, boys are invited to stand as Presidential candidates, with the three boys gaining the most votes elected as President of the School Council, with two Vice-Presidents serving under him.

Sons and Parents’ Maths Competition.

On Thursday, 28 September we are holding our inaugural sons and parent/grandparent maths competition.  This is open to boys in years 3-8 only.  Each boy must be accompanied by one parent or grandparent (not an older sibling).  It is from 5:00-6:00pm in the Studio and entries are limited and on a first come first served basis.  If you would like your son to take part, please e mail Joanna.yeats-brown@newbeacon.org.uk with the name of your son and the accompanying adult.  We ask that the accompanying adult is not overly competitive, this is an inclusive, fun competition and we would like to see the boys answering many of the questions.

Office 365 Passwords

Over the summer a number of updates were rolled out which have affected the boys’ access to Office 365.  The main upside of this is that they should be able to access any piece of work completed and saved in lessons at home through their OneDrive app on Office 365.  It also means that their password for Office 365 has changed: for most boys it will be the same password they use to log in to the school network.

The Year 5s have had their passwords updated last night and should have a label stuck into their contact books with their new credentials.

The boys’ email addresses have also been updated to the format 15bloggsj@newbeacon.org.uk, where 15bloggsj will be the same username they use to log on to the school network.

Please email Mr O’Prey if you continue to have any issues.
