Every boy from Nursery to Year 4 participated in a Harvest Festival this week and weren’t they brilliant?! Many thanks to everyone who came to watch, donated money and food, decorated the Chapel and sang along with ‘Big Red Combine Harvester’. Thank you to all the teachers, TAs and Dr. Maslin for working with the boys to put on such special services. Sincere thanks for your generous donations, we raised £217.31 to donate to Sevenoaks Larder and Sevenoaks Loaves and Fishes, along with all of the food donations.

The theme of this year’s UK Black History Month is ‘Celebrating our Sisters.’ This week in assembly we looked at some influential Black British women from different industries and focused on Mary Seacole, a wartime nurse who rode on horseback through battlefields to help injured soldiers during the Crimean War.

Eco Warrior Initiative – Suggested Pre-Prep and Junior School Woodland Walk
We all enjoy a good country walk, it is healthy, provides a good family activity and we have some beautiful countryside to explore.  This ties in beautifully with the Eco Warriors’ initiative to grow some trees.

On your country walk could you collect a nut from the oak, the beech, the sweet chestnut and the horse chestnut trees and bring one or two to me.  Having received the nuts we will learn how to grow the trees; some nuts have to go in the fridge for a month or two to simulate winter.  In addition to this we will be helping the environment and we hope some parents might want one of these trees for their homes.  As it is autumn and the Oak, Beech, Sweet Chestnut (edible nut) and Horse Chestnut (conkers) are laden with nuts we thought a countryside walk could chime beautifully with identifying each tree.  At school we will have a display of these nuts, the leaves and talk about the bark of the trees to help with identification.

We hope that you might combine this project with your autumn country walks.

BBC 500-Word Story Competition
Just a reminder to encourage your boys to enter the BBC 500 word competition. It was introduced to the Pre-Prep and Junior School boys during assembly on Wednesday.

Inspiration for 7 to 11 year olds: Learning resources for ages 7-11 – BBC Teach

Stories need to be created and submitted to the BBC from home however, we would love boys to bring in their typed story to tread to the class if they want.

We would urge you to encourage your boys to take part in this great BBC initiative. Entries must be submitted no later than Friday, 10 November 2023.

Imago School Photographs
Please follow this link to view and purchase your child’s school photograph. Don’t forget to place your order by 2 November and take advantage of free delivery to school.

Reflective Armbands
When boys return to school after the half-term break, it is a requirement that, with the darker mornings and evenings, they wear their reflective armbands to and from school. These need to be pinned to their outermost garment and clearly named. If your son requires a new set of armbands, this will be arranged by your sons’ Form Tutor and the cost will be added to your end of term bill.

Head’s Art Competition
Calling all budding artists, the inaugural Head’s Art Competition is running until the end of half-term giving plenty of time to pick up pencils/paintbrushes/oils or crayons! The entry should be A4 size but can be portrait or landscape and the theme for this term is ‘New Beginnings’. The winning entries will be exhibited in Mrs Brownsdon’s Study.

Parents’ Evenings
Pre-Prep and Junior School Parents’ Evenings will take place this week. Boys’ books will be left out for you to look through before or after your scheduled meeting. We thank you in advance for keeping to your allocated time. If you don’t get to cover everything in your session, please do make a follow-up appointment with teachers. Mr Young (Games, PE) and Mr O’Prey (ICT) will be available to speak to at the Junior School Parents’ Evenings. No appointment is required.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend. Let’s hope the sun shines again.
