As the days grow shorter and the air turns crisper, we come to the end of our first half-term. It is a good time to stop and reflect on the many successes and achievements of the past six and a half weeks. Whether they have been on the football pitch, in the Music room or in the classroom, there is a lot to celebrate. We have been busy with Information Evenings, trips, Parents’ Evenings, Harvest Services and even a Maths Problem-Solving Day thrown in for good measure. The boys have enjoyed the variety of the new extra-curricular activities on offer however they are tired. Just because they are booked into a club, please don’t feel that they must attend every week. Please ensure your son gets some rest over the next two weeks as the next half-term promises to be busy. It is such a pleasure working with your delightful boys, they put a smile on my face every single day! I wish you all a restful and rejuvenating half-term, whatever you may be doing.

E-Wise Beacon
Online safety is an important part of keeping children safe at school and at home. We address this in school through teaching our students how to stay safe and behave appropriately online. This approach is most successful if we work together and reinforce safe behaviour at home too. Please read the latest edition of the E-Wise Beacon to see how we keep boys safe at school and recommended websites full of information as to how you can keep boys safe at home too.

BBC 500-Word Story Competition
Just a reminder to encourage your boys to enter the BBC 500 Word competition. It was introduced to the Pre-Prep and Junior School boys during assembly.

You could watch some videos to help them get ideas. Please click on the links below:

Inspiration for 5- 7 year olds: Learning resources for ages 5-7 – BBC Teach

Inspiration for 7 to 11 year olds: Learning resources for ages 7-11 – BBC Teach

Stories need to be created and submitted to the BBC from home.  However, we would love boys to bring in their typed story to read to the class if they want.

We would urge you to encourage your boys to take part in this great BBC initiative. Entries must be submitted no later than Friday, 10 November, 2023.

Reflective Armbands
When boys return to school after the half-term break, it is a requirement that, with the darker mornings and evenings, they wear their reflective armbands to and from school. These need to be pinned to their outermost garment and clearly named. If your son requires a new set of armbands, this will be arranged by your sons’ Form Tutor and the cost will be added to your end of term bill.

Uniform
During the next half-term, boys will be required to wear their winter uniform to school. This comprises the following:

  • Grey trousers or shorts
  • Long-sleeved (new) blue or grey shirt (from Horncastles) and tie
  • Long grey New Beacon socks (if wearing shorts)
  • Smart black shoes (leather)
  • New Beacon jumper
  • Blazer
  • New Beacon coat (either the newer-style waterproof or the more traditional duffle coat)
  • Armbands on outer-most garment

Remembrance
Advance notice that all Pre-Prep and Junior School boys will be attending our in-school Remembrance service on Friday, 10 November. As this is a formal occasion, all boys must have their blazers in school for the day.

Last call for the Head’s Art Competition
Any final entries to Mrs Brownsdon’s art competition titled ‘new beginnings’ must be submitted immediately upon return to school on Monday, 6 November.

Christmas Card Project – message from Mrs Jackson
We are taking part in the Christmas Card Project again this year. This is an opportunity for your child’s unique artwork to be printed onto a variety of things: cards, mugs, wrapping paper etc.; raising funds for the school. Your child should have brought home their design over the past couple of days. If you would like to order any of the above, please visit:  www.apfsorders.co.uk or use the QR code on the leaflet.

The order deadline is midnight on 10 November 2023 with an estimated dispatch back to school of 25  November 2023.

Wishing you all a wonderful half-term break. We look forward to welcoming the boys back on Monday, 6 November.
