With a noticeable chill to the weather this week, things are certainly starting to feel a little more festive weather-wise and there is even a slight chance of snow this weekend… we shall see! Teachers are busy writing full end of term reports for Y5 and compiling grades for Y6 tutorials – reports will be coming home via boy-post on the last day of term.
Next week will see a range of festive activities getting under way with the Carol Concert at Tonbridge Chapel, the Christmas Fayre, whole school Christmas lunch as well as the first of many festive jumper days! We also have the delights of the traditional ‘form feast’ to look forward to on the last morning of term – further details attached.
Middle School boys will also have the pleasure of watching the younger ones in their Nativity plays, a treat that always brings much festive cheer.
With so much going on in the closing stages of the term, boys will become tired and susceptible to the inevitable bugs that start to circulate at this time of year – a timely reminder, therefore, that if your son is unwell do keep him at home until he has recovered fully, keeping your our First Aid Lead (Mrs Hoffmann) and your son’s Form Tutor informed.
Below are important notices for the coming week and beyond: do read carefully and inwardly digest!
Current Y5 & Y6 – Design & Technology Bologna Trip 2024
In October 2024 the Design and Technology Department of The New Beacon is proposing to take a group of year 6 and 7 boys to Bologna. For more details and a provisional programme of events please click here. Alongside the obvious design and construction elements, boys will explore the flavours of Italy at Fico Eataly World with an ice cream making masterclass. Let’s face it, who doesn’t love gelato!
The proposed departure date would be the 19th October 2024, the start of the October half term. This email is to gauge interest, and depending on numbers, the overall price would be around £1300. To that end, should you be interested please email Mr Barratt at firstname.lastname@example.org
Y5 classes for January
We have begun the process of looking at the composition of the Y5 classes ready for a re-shuffle in time for the new calendar year. As outlined at the Y5 information evening in September, there will be two mixed-ability classes and one streamed class. Y5 parents will receive a letter with further details towards the end of term informing you of your son’s class for next year, along with their form tutor. A polite reminder that the composition of the new classes is the school’s decision.
Head’s Permission for Absences, Inclusive of Off Games
Parents are reminded that they should seek permission from the Head and not form teachers for their son to be away from school for a day or more, or a part of the day. You may copy a relevant staff member or the Section Head into your email.
We would prefer boys to remain at school should they be off games. If they are recovering from an illness and deemed to be well enough to be in school, we will ensure that they are participating in an indoor activity, doing their prep or catching up on work that they may have missed whilst at home.
Christmas Jumper Swap
From Monday we shall be providing a Christmas Jumper Swap Shop. Thank you to everyone who has already provided the stall with jumpers they no longer need. Please continue to bring in any Christmas Jumper that you no longer wish to have. The donated jumpers will be on sale inside the Pre Prep Entrance all next week, at the cost of £5. Please click here for more details.
In keeping with our usual tradition, there will be ‘Form Feasts’ on the last morning of term. Please click here for more details.
Booking for the Spring Term Activities opens on SchoolsBuddy this Tuesday, 5 December and will close on Friday, 8 December. The list of activities available will be sent out to parents via email on Monday.
Please note that next term all bookings for Wraparound Care will be on the website only, together with Early Years Activity Club (Nursery & Reception), Pre-Prep Activity Club (Y1 & Y2) and Junior School Prep Club (Y3 & Y4).
This year, the choice of charities for the school to support has been entirely led by the boys. Any boy who felt an affinity with a charity could present to their Section’s School Council elected members. The Council members then deliberated and all voted on the charities to be supported.
We are pleased to say that this year we will be supporting:
The Make a Wish Foundation
The British Heart Foundation
The Stroke Association
It was inspiring to hear the many varied reasons why the boys supported certain charities. A huge well done to all of those who presented for putting themselves and their charities forward.
The NBPA AGM is taking place in the NBC on Tuesday, 5 December at 9.00am. This meeting is open to all The New Beacon parents. A link to the agenda is below as well as the minutes from the last AGM. Tea and coffee will be provided.
If you would like to attend the AGM, please email email@example.com
