What a Wonderful Start to the Year

This week has been focusing on getting to know each other and learning about what makes us all special. We have been learning about each other’s families.

We have had PE with Mr Eisawy, Music with Dr Maslin and also enjoyed music and movement sessions. We have painted lots of pictures, and some will come home, and some will begin to fill our display boards in here. We are also enjoying mixing paint and creating new colours and shades.

Reception thoroughly enjoyed their first day back at school this week, and the start of a new term, and what a glorious start it was.  They enjoyed exploring and playing in the snow around the school as well as learning about the signs of Winter.

Personal, Social and Emotional
On Friday we held our annual Christingle Service in The Chapel. A boy from each class was selected to participate in making a Christingle and bringing it to the service. Aidan did a super job representing Reception. We have also revisited the school rules and reminded the boys about handwashing and keeping ourselves healthy and preventing illness.

A Winter Wonderland Walk
We have explained to the boys about the four seasons and talked about the characteristics of Winter. The boys have loved being back at school after their Christmas break and have returned full of energy and a love for learning, which is great to see. To start us off with our new topic of Winter the weather was very kind to us, and brought a beautifully bright and crisp morning this week. We took the opportunity to go for a walk around our school grounds to look for signs of Winter. We are very lucky to have such a stunning setting and surroundings for our school, and the boys loved exploring and looking for different frosty leaves, ice and a very hard ground. The boys also learnt about deciduous and evergreen trees, and we also explored our shadows with the very low sun across The Upper. It was a fun morning, and we have made a short video to show you all about it which can be found here.

Communication and Language
We asked the boys to talk about their Christmas holidays. We then drew a picture and wrote about their favourite present.

Expressive Arts and Design
The boys have used their experiences whilst walking around the school grounds to then draw their own Winter Tree. They used oil pastels to draw the trunk and branches, and then a paint wash was added to create the beautiful winter sky. These will be on display in the classroom soon.
