SENIOR SCHOOL SPORTS
A long trip to Ipswich was on the cards for the IAPS U13 Hockey Qualifiers. With several boys dropping out through illness we had the bare minimum player which meant it was going to be a long day for the Boys involved with 8 games in store.
Game one against eventual qualifiers Gresham’s was a difficult start with The New Beacon just adjusting to limited match time, a tough 3-1 loss with Alex P scoring. Game 2 against St Faith’s was a narrow 2-0 loss with New Beacon dominating the procession with Harry F taking on the opposition with ease. Game three against Kings College was a narrow 1-0 loss with a brilliant performance from Tom S. Game four was an enthralling 3-3 drew with Beeston Hall with Xander scoring 3 individual outstanding goals. Game Five against Town close was a 1-1 draw with Alex M providing several sensational assists. The last pool game against Orwell Park was an unlucky 1-0 loss with 9 shots on target from New Beacon and 1 for Orwell but unable to convert. Onto the Plate semi-final against Chigwell and a dominant performance finished 0-0, onto penalty flicks and some superb saves from Sam in goal turned into sudden death but New Beacons were unable to convert and loss 3-2 on penalties. The plate play-off against Framlingham was against a closely fought match with a 1-1 finish and so onto the 2nd penalty flicks of the day, this time a sudden death loss with the scores 6-5 on penalties. Theo captained the side for the day and was instrumental in keeping out a number of goals and dominating at the back of the pitch. Well done to all involved.
The NB tennis season got underway on Saturday and the teams did a brilliant job at the Sevenoaks Doubles. They took all top three spots out of the 16 pairs draw (made up of different local schools) and undoubtedly the strongest school squad on the day! The boys were all well behaved and showed great sportsmanship on and off the courts which were equally impressive. Among them:
Derek Y (Yr 5) & Alex N (Yr 6) Winner, Jai K & Diwen Si both Yr 6 Runner Up, Marcus P & Edward M Yr 6 Third Place. With Jack W & Arthur L just missing out of qualifying but fought very hard in all their games.
Congratulations to Rory S (7C) who finished runner up in the U13 Kent Schools Table Tennis Championship this week. Rory progressed to the final without dropping a set, playing some thrilling matches along the way, the highlight being a 14-12 11-9 quarter final win that drew a big crowd who enjoyed the long rallies and high-quality shots. Rory came up just short in the final against the top ranked Kent player at that age group, but he’ll be back next year to try again! Conor also entered and performed extremely well, finishing 3rd overall, also a superb achievement.
On Wednesday, 31 January, the U13B & U12B took on Hawthorns. The U12’s won with a close encounter 10-7. The U13B’s fought valiantly against a strong Hawthorns side losing 13-3. The boys rallied well in the second half to pull back some pride. Good performances from Daniel C, Ethan S and Nicholas T with PoM being awarded to Edward B.
MIDDLE SCHOOL SPORTS
On Wednesday, 31 January, we entered The Tonbridge Festival with U11A & B, U10 taking on a strong field of competitors. U11A were triumphant in the final beating Yardley Court by 5 tries – 2 with some outstanding performance. The Under 11B team were entered into the Tonbridge School Under 11 “A” team tournament om 31 January. This was obviously going to be a tough competition for the team, but the boys played some lovely rugby against some quality teams. While the team he lost all their matches they played with considerable skill, great heart and all our year 6 coaches (3) were very proud of their performances. There were opportunities to win or draw one or two but a forward pass or a knock on at vital moments saw these slip away. This was a great learning curve for the boys, and we (as coaches) were able to see areas where we could build additional strength. My thanks to all the boys who were amazing and to the parents who were so supportive. My thanks also go to the Under 11 A team (winners of the tournament) who were so supportive and encouraging to the “B” team, it was lovely to witness.
On Wednesday 31 January, the U11C, U11D, U10Bs & U10Cs took on Hawthorns. The U11D’s with a resounding 12-5 victory with beautiful flowing rugby and resolute defending. PoM Alex P. U11Cs won 9-6, a superbly exciting game with Joe P PoM. U10Bs was an extremely entertaining game of end-to-end rugby with Myles Woodward PoM. U10Cs, game of the century with lots of attacking play up and down the pitch with the score finishing 15-14 to The New Beacon. PoM was Yejun C for his speed and try scoring ability. Well done for a superb afternoon of Rugby.
