Dragons, Mental Health Week, Safety Internet Day and a visiting A List celebrity to top it all off! At The New Beacon we don’t do things in halves.

Mrs Taylor kicked off Children’s Mental Health Week with an with assembly where 140 boys from the PP and JS gathered in the central area. She then released 140 balloons; each one with a boy’s name on in. The boys had 3 minutes to find their balloon. Once boys found their own balloon, they were then asked to help others find their balloon, and after a chaotic but joyous 3 minutes….the task was achieved! “These balloons are like happiness. We will never find it if everyone is looking for their own. But if we care about other people’s happiness, we’ll find ours too.”

Tuesday brought with it National Safer Internet Day. Mr O’Prey and I did an assembly encouraging the boys to tell an adult if they ever see anything that makes them worried, scared or sad on the internet. Year 1 delighted us with their singing of the ‘Funny Tummy Song’ (which you can see on TNB Facebook page). We finished with a quiz to test their internet safety knowledge.

This morning was a hive of excitement as we came together to celebrate Lunar New Year. The boys enjoyed making Chinese lanterns, dragon fortune tellers, and some of them even practised their chopstick skills. We are so grateful to all the parent volunteers who helped to make it such a memorable morning. Special thanks to Leo in 3SS who did a wonderful PowerPoint presentation explaining the history of this holiday.

Junior School boys then dashed off to see the renowned Sir Lenny Henry, who is a captivating and inspirational speaker. He shared jokes, came up with a character (with the help of his 6 assistants) and then read excerpts from some of his books. He also shared his ‘Top 4 Tips for Writing’:

  1. Read as much as you can.
  2. Take a notebook everywhere.
  3. If you see something strange, write it down.
  4. If you have an idea, write it down.

Wishing you and your family a restful and enjoyable half-term. I look forward to seeing the boys back on 19 February when we will have our Pancake Day assembly.

Trip to Polka Theatre
We have arranged a theatre trip for the boys in Reception and Year 1 to see ‘Tidy’ on Wednesday, 28 February at the Polka Theatre, Wimbledon. The boys need to wear their school uniform. We will be leaving school promptly at 8.30am so boys must be in school by 8.15am please. A morning snack will be provided by the school. Parents will need to supply a nut free packed lunch and a water bottle in a small named bag which your son can carry. No pocket money will be needed. We will return to school before the end of the school day. In case of a significant delay, we will contact you via Clarion Call. Please complete the online permission form to authorise your son’s attendance and remember to include your contact telephone number for the day. We are very much looking forward to our visit to the Polka Theatre.
