Mr Smith, the butler came to visit the Year 1 boys to explain how houses were cleaned in Victorian times.  Using various artefacts, the boys experienced what life was like in a busy household for the butler, footmen and maids before electricity had been invented.  The boys did some ironing in the laundry using a flat iron. They learnt how to light a fire using bellows in the drawing room.  The silver had to be polished, tables laid, and the carpets beaten.  Finally, after being told that children in Victorian times had to be seen but not heard, the boys had fun playing with wooden toys that would have been found in a Victorian nursery.  The boys learnt many new and interesting facts about England during the reign of Queen Victoria.
