As I walked up the stairs to the entrance of the Pre-Prep building this morning, hands laden with bags and an umbrella trying to shelter myself from the downpour, a smiley, curly-haired Year 2 boy ran to the door to open it for me, greeting me with the most joyous, ‘Good morning, Mrs. Alteirac!’ Good manners, thoughtfulness, consideration. These are the characteristics we’re trying to instill in the boys, with your help, and it puts a smile on my face when we see them in evidence. The smile hasn’t left my face all day.

Reception and Y1 boys enjoyed a trip to the Polka Theatre in London on Wednesday to see ‘Tidy’, an enchanting show with important life lessons. Pete, the badger, likes everything to be neat and tidy but accidentally destroys his home when he gets carried away. Two Year 1 boys read their brilliant recounts of the trip during our Celebration Assembly this morning. Standing up at the age of 6 to read your own piece of writing in front of 140 boys, not to mention the teachers, is quite remarkable.

Please do take note of the important notices below, especially with regards to World Book Day, which is next Thursday. An e-mail including a link to sign up for Parents’ Evenings will be sent on Monday. A gentle reminder to parents not to enter the Junior School building when collecting your son from Prep. If you wait outside the library door, your son will come out to meet you.

With January and February out of the way, hopefully we can look forward to sunnier and warmer days ahead. Happy St David’s Day and do enjoy the weekend ahead.

For this World Book Day, pupils can create their very own Dream Jar at home, inspired by ‘The BFG’ by Roald Dahl.  They can participate either by drawing their Dream Jar or by creating their own Dream Jar using an empty jar. Please follow the link below for more details.

Spring Concert – Thursday, 7 March at 7pm in The NBC
We are very much looking forward to our Spring Instrumental ensembles concert. Almost 90 boys from Years 2 to 8 will be performing in one or more of the following musical groups. We will also have some performances from our Year 8 music scholars.

The Big Plastic Count
We are embarking on an important initiative which will feed into a major Greenpeace initiative.  This initiative is designed to find out how much plastic, and the type of plastic, that is flowing out of houses.  Over 4,000 schools have entered, and The New Beacon is certainly taking part. Every class is in the Pre-Prep and Junior School will be registered, and we’re hoping Middle and Senior School will want to take part too.  We will be promoting this initiative at assembly next week and each boy will come home with an easy-to-use tally chart on which the plastic can be logged over a full week.

The initiative will run from Monday, 11 March to Sunday, 17 March and we would ask the boys to return the tally chart on Monday, 18 March so that we can collate the information and send it to Greenpeace.  We will send you further information in next week’s Friday Report.  Our thanks to the Eco Warriors for wanting to take this initiative forward.

Kind Request for Raffle Donations
To all our generous parents, teachers & friends of The New Beacon School.
The NBPA are looking for donations for our Junior and Adult raffles at this year’s Summer Fete. All monies raised are given to the school.

All donations will be gratefully received!

We are also happy to accept items for the raffles from businesses and are willing to display the donors’ details on the raffle stall poster and the Summer Fete Programme of Events. We can also display promotional material on the raffle tables on Fete Day. All donations are welcome.

We all know how excited our children get over the raffle, let’s make it the best one yet!
