Into week 2 we swiftly moved and the sun appeared to want to make an appearance, but alas, with not much success. Never mind, we are all used to ‘getting stuck in’ no matter what the weather Gods throw at us.

Cricket matches have commenced and both the U12 and U13 boys met with success in their cup matches as well as a solid performance away to Cumnor House, Haywards Heath.

Activities started this week and it is good to see how many of the Senior School boys are participating in one or more of the activities on offer. Boys are reminded that should they not be able to attend a particular activity for whatever reason, they must inform the activity leader as an attendance register is kept.

By the time this is published, our Year 8 Tonbridge candidates would have completed their Scholarship examinations. They will no doubt be exhausted and we hope that they will enjoy their weekend. We have already wished the Sevenoaks School candidates all the very best wishes for their examinations next week. Good luck, chaps!

It was good to hear some news relating to some of our boys in Year 7, viz. Louis A, Rory S and Oliver F who, playing for Chipstead Eagles, have won the U12 Crowborough and District League Cup.  Chipstead have also won Division A of the Crowborough & District League, this without losing a game. Now that is the kind of form Leeds United will be looking for when they play in the Premiership next season!

I wish you all a pleasant and peaceful weekend. Please, sunshine!

Head of Senior School

CALLING ALL BUDDING COMPOSERS!
COMPETITION FOR YEARS 5 – 8
In class music, some boys have been listening to Camille Saint-Saens’ ‘Carnival of the Animals’ and seeing if they can guess which animal is being portrayed. They have also listened to Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf which uses an array of different instruments to portray the various characters in the story.

Your task, boys, is to compose your own original piece which conjures up a particular animal. Here are the guidelines:

  • Your piece must be original and have an animal/creature title.
  • You may combine with another boy/boys and work collaboratively.
  • You may use software like GarageBand to help you.
  • Once you have finished your piece, send your recording to me. I will produce a short list and Dr. Maslin will judge the winning entries with prizes for different age groups.
  • All entries should be submitted by half term.
  • Good luck!

YEAR 7 VISIT TO THE TONBRIDGE SCHOOL BARTON SCIENCE CENTRE
On Thursday, 9 May, all boys in Year 7 will be travelling to Tonbridge School Barton Science Centre. The boys will split into two groups,  spending part of the afternoon taking part in the British Physics Olympiad, Year 7 challenge. After which, they will be completing some experiments in the Laboratories, being taught by a member of the Tonbridge Science department.

This is a fantastic opportunity for boys to get a taste of senior school life.

The trip will take place during normal school hours so pick up is at the usual time. The boys will need to wear their full school uniform and won’t require any further equipment on the day.

SENIOR SCHOOL CHAPEL SERVICE
Friday, 26 April
Parents are invited to attend this service which takes place in St George’s Chapel this evening. It starts promptly at 4.45 p.m. and boys should be collected at 5.20 p.m. A reminder that there is no service for Senior School next week.

LOST PROPERTY
Whilst risking sounding like a broken record, please ensure that all your son’s clothing is named. Despite a ‘name check’ of uniform and other clothing last week – as I write, in Mr Probert’s office he has 7 jumpers, 2 blazers, 1 pair of tracksuit trousers and 1 fleece – all un-named. All are in near perfect condition and, sadly, we have no way of returning them to their rightful owners.

CHARITY BOOTS
We are always looking for ways to make a difference beyond our school community and are grateful to William in Year 5 for drawing our attention to Charity Boots.

If your son has outgrown a pair of football boots that are in good second-hand condition and could still be used, please look out for the ‘Charity Boots’ collection point outside the NBC from next week.

No previous experience is necessary as full training will be given. A DBS check will be carried out and references will be required.

If you are interested in joining the team or would like to find out more, please email Alison Harrison: alison.harrison@newbeacon.org.uk.
