One of the many highlights of my job is boys visiting me in my office. When a boy arrives at my door, I often say, “Is this a ‘good visit’?”, as I hold my thumb up with a smile on my face, or “Is this a ‘not so good visit’?”, as I point my thumb downwards and frown. More often than not, you’ll be happy to hear, it is for a ‘good visit’. Teachers send boys to see me when they have done an extra special piece of work and nothing gives me greater satisfaction than seeing a boy, proud of what he’s achieved, sharing his work with me. Whether it is reading, writing, Maths or Art, it puts a smile on my face and lifts my spirits!

Stereotypes would lead us to believe that reading and writing are for girls whilst Maths is for boys. However, stereotypes for both girls and boys limit their potential and restrict their individuality. I can assure you that boys at The New Beacon love to write. This week alone, I have had several boys come to my office to read me their stories, teeming with descriptive language and imagery. Creative writing offers boys a platform to explore their imagination and encourages self-expression whilst enhancing their communication skills.

This morning in Celebration Assembly, we said a sad farewell to Mrs. Beresford, our dedicated Nursery Manager, who opened The New Beacon Nursery 5 years ago. She also ran the After School programme for several years and was invaluable in her support during the pandemic. Her dedication and commitment to boys across the whole school will be sorely missed. We wish her all the best as she ventures on to pastures new!

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend ahead with sunshine at last after the wash-out of Bank Holiday Monday.
