As we finish the penultimate week of this half-term, it is amazing to think how much the boys have accomplished in just five weeks. There is always a steady pace of events at The New Beacon and this half-term has been no different. This last week we were happy to host both The Granville and Walthamstow Hall in our annual inter-school athletics competition. It was lovely to see the upper so busy with all the children engaged in a variety of track and field events.

On Tuesday morning the Middle School were fortunate enough to watch the dress rehearsal of the Year 4 play. It is always nerve-wracking for the younger boys to perform in front of older boys. The Middle School were a supportive audience and enjoyed the delightful ‘underwater extravaganza’ which would have brought back memories of their own performances from their younger years.

We braved the drizzle on Thursday morning for the biennial whole school photograph. This year we have also reintroduced form photos. The school room is covered in historical photographs of past forms and teams going back through many years. It is lovely to think our current boys will be part of this ongoing history of The New Beacon.

The subject teachers have been preparing the boys for their upcoming exams. You would have received a letter detailing the exams after half term and the revision material which has been provided to support the boys at home. If you have any questions or concerns about the exams, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Assistant Head of Middle School

CHAPEL CHOIR AUDITIONS FOR YEAR 6 BOYS
On Thursday, 23 May at 1pm, we will be holding auditions for boys who would like to be considered to join the Chapel Choir. We welcome all boys to attend these auditions. They need to consider being committed to twice weekly rehearsals which are held at breaktimes. The Chapel Choir leads all the Senior School Chapel services, and we also have other events during the year which give the boys opportunities to sing in various other venues. Successful boys will sing as probationers at the Year 6 and 7 Service on Friday, 21 June.

PERSONAL HYGIENE
Could we ask all parents to continue to talk to their sons about personal hygiene? As they are all maturing, and with the rise in temperatures through the summer term, a spot of deodorant may be necessary to control the ‘whiff of boy’ we mentioned in previous Friday reports. We would encourage the boys to use a roll-on or stick rather than bringing in a spray, as this can lead to some over-excited spraying, which we wouldn’t want to happen.

CHANGING ROOMS
Please can we remind all parents that you are not allowed to enter any of the boys’ changing rooms. This is a Safeguarding issue, and it must be adhered to. We thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

THE NEW BEACON AND ROAD SAFETY
It has been noted and reported that a few parents are not adhering to the speed limit on the drive around the school at drop-off and pick-up times. All drivers are reminded that they must observe the speed limit, be vigilant as you drive on the campus and certainly not be using mobiles until you are stationary.

Even though we regularly remind boys about their own safety on campus, there is bound to be an occasion that one or more boys may not observe the necessary safety checks before crossing at the pedestrian crossings.

PERMISSION FROM THE HEAD
We have recently been inundated with requests for boys to be off school for a myriad of reasons. Most are emergencies and we fully understand and are sympathetic when these do arise. Might I, however, remind you to email the Head, Mrs Brownsdon with your request and to copy the form teacher into this correspondence.

WATER BOTTLES FOR HOME FIXTURES
Boys playing home fixtures are requested to bring their water bottles to home fixtures. There will be water filling stations for the boys to replenish their water bottles. We are trying to do away with supplying plastic bottles of water.

CALLING ALL BUDDING COMPOSERS!

REMINDER: CLOSING DATE IS FRIDAY BEFORE HALF TERM – 24 MAY

In class music, some boys have been listening to Camille Saint-Saens’ ‘Carnival of the Animals’ and seeing if they can guess which animal is being portrayed. They have also listened to Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf which uses an array of different instruments to portray the various characters in the story.

Your task, boys, is to compose your own original piece which conjures up a particular animal. Here are the guidelines:

  • Your piece must be original and have an animal/creature title.
  • You may combine with another boy/boys and work collaboratively.
  • You may use software like GarageBand to help you.
  • Once you have finished your piece, send your recording to me. I will produce a short list and Dr. Maslin will judge the winning entries with prizes for different age groups.
  • All entries should be submitted by half term.
  • Good luck!
