The Pre-Prep (Reception to Year 2) forms the foundation of The New Beacon in all senses. Our ethos is that of a family, which needs each individual to function properly – our teachers are committed to providing a firm base on which to build not only academic skills, but the ability to socialise, share, laugh and play. We also start working on those ‘soft skills’ such as resilience and perseverance.
Each child knows that he is important and develops a sense of self through sharing of good work and achievements in assembly, involvement in the way their school is run and working with boys in different year groups, imparting skills, knowledge and humour. A careful balance is found between introducing core concepts, independent thinking skills and ensuring that children are happy and settled in the school. Our excellent pastoral care means that no child should ever feel overlooked. Small classes, each with their own Teaching Assistant, allow teachers to provide personalised learning for all levels of ability. Specialist teachers in Music, ICT, Swimming and Games add to the breadth of education received, allowing every boy the chance to try out new things and find his niche, equipping each with all the skills which they will need to move onwards through the school.
A huge number of clubs are available for Pre-Perp boys including Drama, Gardening, Arts & Crafts, Lego, Chess, Mandarin, LCM Drama and Judo. From Year 1, many boys start learning a musical instrument.
