Opportunities to experience foreign cultures, foods and climates are available at the New Beacon each year. These tend to be either study based or follow a sporting or choral theme. Every two years, Messrs Knipe and Presnell and Mrs Hunter intend leading an educational trip to Iceland. The first trip in February 2018 proved to be most popular.

Overseas Chapel Choir Tours

In recent years, the Chapel Choir has toured to Venice, Rome and Dubrovnik. Apart from enjoying the local scenery and tasting the culinary delights, the choristers have had the opportunity to perform in some of the most majestic ecclesiastical surroundings (Dubrovnik Cathedral, St Peter’s Basilica in Rome, St Mark’s and Il Redentore in Venice).

The New Beacon Sailing Club European jaunts

Sailing has become a popular activity at the New Beacon, and every year Mr O’Prey organises a sailing trip, visiting destinations such as Northern France, the Netherlands, Belgium or the Scilly Isles. In recent years, including most recently in July 2022, boys have sailed across the North Sea and back from Hull to a north European destination aboard a 72′ yacht called CatZero.  In 2013 the cruise took them to Holland and to Bruges in 2014 and 2022.  The 2015 jaunt initially set out for Jersey, but complications with wind and tide saw Brittany reached followed by further challenges in and around The Channel. In 2021, New Beacon joined the Prolific, a 90′ yacht for a few days around Cornwall.

Iceland Adventure

Iceland is a bi-annual trip organised by Mr Knipe. Iceland is an amazing country to visit and this adventure is open to boys in Years 6 – 8. Using Hjardarbol near the capital city Reykjavik as our base, we explore the Eyjafjallajokull Flood Plains, Seljalandsfoss, Eyjafjallajokull Visitors Centre, Solheimajokull Glacier, The Lava Centre in Hveragerdi, The Secret Lagoon, The Colden Circle (Thingvellir National Park – Efsti Dalur – Geysir – Gullfoss) and the Bridge between the continents; all of this before returning to the UK after a five day adventure of a lifetime!

Year 8 Study trip to France

Each October, the Year 8 boys travel to northern France for 3-4 days where they are exposed to the language at first hand. A mixture of visits to places of industry and history is mixed with leisure time on the beach.

New Beacon Ski Trip

Every second year during the Easter holidays, a week-long ski trip heads for the snowy slopes. Skiers of all abilities from Years 7 and 8 enjoy the evening entertainment as much as the on piste activity. In recent years the snow has been sampled at Vermont (USA), Saas-Fee (Switzerland) and more recently in Passo Tonale, Northern Italy.

Year 8 Leavers’ Trip

Each year the Year 8 leavers spend a week away from school.  Traditionally, the trip was to France; a five-day visit that includes WW1 and WW2 history visits, a WW2 battlefields tour,  visits to a local biscuit factory, a traditional bakery and a chocolate factory, a day at a local theme park, and much more besides.  The Yr 8 leavers have the opportunity for an end of year excursion and often will go to Paris, including visits to Disneyland, Buffalo Bill Wild West Show, the Air Space Museum, and the Musée de la Grande Guerre. More recently, the boys have had a Leavers’ trip to Cornwall.

Other French Trips

Some years there are additional French trips.  In March 2017 a group of Year 6-8 boys went to Paris, and visited the Tour Montparnasse, the Stade de France, the Bateaux Mouches, and of course Disneyland.
