Life at The New Beacon School
At The New Beacon School, every school day is designed to balance structure, learning, and enjoyment.
As one of the leading independent prep schools, we create an environment that supports academic excellence, personal growth, and a sense of routine that nurtures confidence and responsibility. Whether preparing for the challenges of a classroom, enjoying breaktimes with friends, or engaging in co-curricular activities, each part of the day contributes to a well-rounded experience. From morning drop-offs to the final bell, our routines reflect the values and ethos that make The New Beacon School one of the UK’s best prep schools.
School Library
The New Beacon boasts two well-stocked libraries—one for Junior School and another for Years 5-8—both recently refurbished to provide a welcoming space for reading, research, and discovery. The main library offers a diverse selection of fiction, non-fiction, and reference books, regularly updated based on recommendations and student input. Boys are encouraged to explore new interests, stay informed on current affairs, and enjoy a variety of newspapers, magazines, and even the weekly edition of The Beano!
Year 5 enjoy dedicated library sessions, while pupil librarians from Year 8 help manage the space. Annual highlights include a two-day book fair and inspiring author visits, which have previously featured Marcus Sedgwick, Paul Dowswell, and Nick Arnold. With an emphasis on fostering a lifelong love of reading, the library also provides suggested reading lists for Middle and Senior School students.

Menus
At The New Beacon, all meals are freshly prepared on-site by our skilled in-house catering team, led by Head Chef Steve Tuck, who brings over 40 years of experience from top hotels, restaurants, and prestigious institutions. The daily menus are well-balanced and nutritious, featuring fresh seasonal vegetables, a vibrant salad bar, and freshly cut fruit, with a focus on introducing new flavors while keeping student favorites in mind.
For boys with dietary needs, meals are carefully prepared in a separate kitchen and served individually. Boarders enjoy a freshly cooked breakfast each morning, while supper menus feature customisable options to suit individual tastes. With a commitment to sourcing local ingredients and incorporating seasonal produce, our menus evolve each term, ensuring variety and quality in every meal.

Trips & Visits
Educational trips and visits are an integral part of life at The New Beacon, bringing learning to life beyond the classroom. From the youngest boys in Pre-Prep to those in the Senior School, each year group benefits from carefully planned excursions that support and enhance the curriculum. Whether it’s exploring marine life at an aquarium, discovering history at Ightham Mote, or engaging in hands-on science at Herstmonceux, these experiences create lasting memories and deepen understanding.
As boys progress, trips become more immersive and adventurous. Junior and Middle School pupils embark on historical reenactments, field studies, and activity days, while Senior School boys enjoy residential trips, geography fieldwork, science lectures, and even social outings. These opportunities inspire curiosity, encourage teamwork, and provide invaluable real-world context to their studies.

The Company System
At The New Beacon School, every boy becomes part of one of four Companies—Drake, Marlborough, Nelson, and Wellington—upon joining. Rooted in the school’s ethos of Respect, Responsibility, and Relationships, the Company System fosters camaraderie, teamwork, and school spirit by bringing together boys from different year groups through friendly competition and shared experiences.
From an early age, pupils engage with the Company System through the rewards structure, earning points for effort, achievement, and behaviour. As they progress, the system evolves into a structured programme of events, with bi-weekly Company Meetings in Middle and Senior School, where pupils take part in a range of pupil-led activities. The ultimate goal is to strengthen the school community, help new pupils settle quickly, and encourage leadership opportunities, particularly for Year 8 Company Captains and sports team leaders.
Programme of Competitions and Events
The Company Cup is awarded at the end of the school year to the company which has scored the highest number of points based upon every area of school life.
The impact of this is to help strengthen the feeling of community and identity within the school and to help new boys settle more quickly into school life.
The Company System also aims to provide leadership opportunities. Primarily this is through the Company Captains posts for Year 8 boys. More leadership opportunities are created with the appointment of captains for the Company sports teams.

The Good Schools Guide, 2025
Review Summary
“The school works hard to develop confidence and self-belief and is good at spotting potential – ‘my son would not get on the stage when he joined but now has the main part in the school play’, .”

School Review
There’s a lovely family feel at this all-boys prep in Sevenoaks which has strong community ties, including with the local girls’ schools. Solidly academic with a great sporting reputation and excellent pastoral care, it mixes tradition and innovation with aplomb, producing happy, purposeful and well-rounded pupils…

Nursery Review
Children can join the Nursery in the term they turn three and are encouraged to do three sessions a week to ensure they settle in. The current site is a short walk from the main school building and includes a bright, spacious room leading to a covered outdoor space where little ones can socialise, play and learn…
