Explore Our Key Subjects

Our key subjects are taught with a focus on active involvement, diverse learning strategies, and a supportive environment where every contribution is valued, ensuring a well-rounded and engaging educational experience.

Art

Art

At The New Beacon School, boys from Nursery to Year 8 explore the vibrant world of art, beginning with the freedom of creativity that young minds naturally embrace. As they progress, they learn that art has no rigid boundaries, fostering decision-making and problem-solving skills that are captured in their sketchbooks alongside their final outcomes. Beyond creativity, art builds essential life skills such as confidence, perseverance, focus, and collaboration. It enhances motor and visual-spatial skills while nurturing respect for diverse cultures and traditions, giving boys a deeper understanding of the wider world.

Our exceptional facilities and dynamic curriculum introduce boys to a wide range of materials and processes, including drawing, painting, ceramics, textiles, photography, sculpture, and mixed media. From studying artists and cultural art in Reception to delving into art movements and creating individual pieces for the annual art exhibition in Senior School, every boy is encouraged to explore and express his unique perspective.

Classics

The Classics Department at The New Beacon School offers boys an enriching journey into the fascinating world of Classical Antiquity, exploring its enduring influence on modern culture. From the myths of ancient Greece to the philosophy, drama, and politics of Rome, boys develop an appreciation for how these civilizations have shaped European culture and beyond. Latin is introduced in Year 6 for the most able boys, with Ancient Greek available in Year 7, offering unique opportunities to master the ‘exotic’ alphabet. Through language studies, boys hone logical thinking, reinforce their understanding of English grammar, and find connections with modern European languages. Classical Civilisation, introduced as an alternative to Latin, provides a dynamic platform to study Greek and Roman myths, life in Athens and Sparta, Greek drama, and even Homeric texts, using resources like the Cambridge Schools Classics Storytelling Project.

Beyond the classroom, boys engage in critical thinking through Philosophy Club, lively debates about topics such as the Elgin Marbles, and immersive trips to locations like Bignor Roman Villa. The annual Dionysia festival is a highlight, where Year 6 boys perform short classical plays, managing props, costumes, and direction independently. These activities cultivate communication skills, original thought, and pride in creative expression, ensuring boys leave with a deeper understanding of ancient cultures and their relevance to the 21st century.

Global Citizenship & Life Skills

GCLS at The New Beacon gets pupils working together on issues of concern and current affairs. It gives them the confidence and skills that they need to act with others to tackle real situations they may face within society. This is done by researching, discussing and debating political, moral and social problems that may be faced in school, and by society, now and in the future. The objectives of GCLS incorporates some of the key themes from the school’s mission statement such as respect for self, respect for “difference”, the belief in “acceptance” rather than “tolerance”, the value of “community” and the development of initiative and responsible independence. Following the Jigsaw syllabus since April 2024, the curriculum focuses on six core themes: Being Me in My World, Celebrating Difference, Dreams and Goals, Healthy Me, Relationships and Changing Me.

GCLS equips pupils with knowledge and skills needed for effective and democratic participation in their communities. It helps pupils to become informed, active citizens, who have the confidence and conviction to work together to accept, follow or to effect change. Pupils learn about their rights, responsibilities, duties and freedoms and about laws, justice and democracy. GCLS encourages respect for different national, religious and ethnic identities. Pupils learn how their societies change and how it continues to change: at school, in the UK, Europe and the wider world. GCLS helps young people to develop their decision making and critical skills as they consider a wide range of political, social, ethical, and moral issues. As they mature, they learn to argue a case on behalf of others as well as for themselves and can speak out on issues of concern.

For the younger boys in Pre-Prep and Junior School, assembly times are a special time to cover many areas of the GCLS curriculum. They may have a focus such as kindness or worries or relate to a specific person such as Martin Luther King. Focus weeks are also held which cover topics such as Anti-Bullying, Road safety, Healthy Eating. To boost self-esteem and to encourage positive behaviour a Celebration Assembly is held each Friday. The courtesy cup and shield are presented to a boy who has shown good manners and courteousness, and the Sports Award goes to someone showing good sportsmanlike behaviour. The Golden book is also read out, recognising not only academic achievement but also perseverance and excellent behaviour. The Top Table awards also cover behaviour and manners in the Dining Hall.

An integral part of Middle and Senior School life is Chapel on Monday and Thursday mornings (Yrs. 5, 6, 7+8) and Friday evenings (Yrs. 7+8 only). Many GCLS related issues are offered for personal reflection during these times, and we have the benefit of guest preachers on Friday evenings too. In addition, a well-established Company system (House system equivalent) at the heart of the school fosters a strong sense of belonging.

In addition to the above, GCLS classes incorporate the idea of being a citizen in school and in society, the idea of community, focus on bullying, acceptable and unacceptable behaviours, what does it mean to be British, multiculturalism, healthy lifestyles (including mental health), what does it mean to be “green”, British law and the legal system in general, systems of government, the value of money, money management, health and safety, legal drugs (specifically alcohol, tobacco/nicotine and vaping), medicinal drugs, crime and punishment and democracy in Britain. Specific classes will also focus on illegal drugs, population growth and Relationship and Sex Education (see separate policy).

Design Technology & Engineering

Design Technology & Engineering is a dynamic subject that inspires boys to become innovative problem solvers and creative thinkers. The department provides a breadth of technological, design, and real-world experiences, encouraging students to combine practical making skills with a deep understanding of materials and technical processes. From the early stages, boys are introduced to 3D problem-solving challenges, allowing them to think critically and develop solutions that address everyday needs. Using a variety of materials and cutting-edge technologies, such as computer-aided design and laser cutting, they learn to design and create products that showcase their ingenuity and practical skills.

Through a hands-on and collaborative approach, boys gain the confidence to think independently and work as part of a team. They are encouraged to explore how thoughtful design can shape the world around them, preparing them to contribute meaningfully to an increasingly technological society. By fostering creativity, critical thinking, and technical expertise, the Design Technology & Engineering curriculum at The New Beacon equips boys with the skills to innovate and adapt in the modern world—living out the ethos that “the best way to predict the future is to design it.”

Digital Creativity & AI

At The New Beacon, Digital Creativity & AI is a vital part of the curriculum, equipping boys with the skills needed to navigate an increasingly digital world.

Through our Digital Creativity curriculum, we develop the boys’ understanding of artificial intelligence and its role in modern society, teaching them to use these tools effectively, critically and responsibly. We integrate AI appropriately across the curriculum, ensuring boys develop both the skills to harness its capabilities and the judgement to recognise when traditional approaches remain most effective.

By integrating ICT into other subjects, such as creating presentations for French or GCLS, boys apply their knowledge across disciplines, reinforcing the practical value of technology as a tool for problem-solving and efficiency.

Coding is introduced early in the Junior School, using platforms like Scratch and Logo, and progresses to advanced topics such as Excel Macros, HTML, and CSS in the Senior School. This progression ensures that boys are prepared for the challenges of senior school and beyond. With an emphasis on fun, collaboration, and creativity, the curriculum encourages pupils to explore freely accessible software like Microsoft Office and Windows Moviemaker at home, fostering independent learning and a lifelong appreciation for technology’s role in everyday life.

English

The English Department places a strong emphasis on cultivating a lifelong love for literature, writing, and critical thinking. From the earliest stages, boys are encouraged to explore their unique potential for precise, articulate, and creative self-expression. Through engaging with classic texts such as Beowulf, Shakespeare, and Chaucer, alongside modern literature, boys discover the transformative power of reading and storytelling. These interactions inspire both creative and analytical thinking, laying the foundation for confident communication and a deep appreciation of the written and spoken word.

Beyond the classroom, boys are provided with rich opportunities to enhance their literary and communication skills. From school-wide poetry recitations and debates on topical issues to interactive Shakespeare workshops and published creative writing in the Dragons’ Teeth collection, the experiences offered spark a collective enthusiasm for language. Activities such as shared reading days, drama performances, and independent research projects further develop confidence and critical thinking, equipping boys with essential life skills that will benefit them in all areas of their education and beyond.

French

French is introduced to boys from Reception, with an increasing focus as they progress through the school. The curriculum emphasizes the four essential language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. From the early stages, boys are encouraged to develop their pronunciation and fluency, with lessons tailored to their abilities. Listening and responding in the target language are central to the teaching approach, with explanations provided in English to ensure clear understanding. Written French plays a crucial role in reinforcing grammar and vocabulary, evolving from simple exercises to free expression as boys expand their vocabulary and grasp of grammatical structures.

As boys enter the Middle and Senior School, they engage with more advanced materials and regular oral exams to build their confidence and competence. Preparation for the Year 8 Leaving Certificate and Senior School entry exams incorporates authentic texts and past papers. The results are a testament to the school’s high standards, with many boys excelling at Scholarship level and achieving top awards such as the Tonbridge Knightley Scholarship. By the time boys leave, most are well-prepared to join the highest sets for French at their next school, equipped with strong language skills and a solid foundation in modern languages.

Geography

Geography at The New Beacon inspires curiosity about how the world works and the impact of change on its delicate balance. Using an “enquiry approach,” boys explore key questions such as “Where is it?” and “How is it changing?” while drawing on personal experiences to add relevance and depth to their studies. With a focus on critical thinking and forming individual opinions, lessons integrate technology like interactive whiteboards, modern library resources, and ICT to complement traditional teaching methods. From global location skills to Ordnance Survey map work, boys gain a strong foundation in essential life skills alongside thematic studies like earthquakes, rivers, climate, and population.

Fieldwork is a cornerstone of the curriculum, making use of the school’s extensive grounds and local areas, while larger excursions take learning further afield. Boys progress from orienteering in Year 4 to studying weather patterns with the school’s on-site weather station, culminating in Year 8 river investigations for Common Entrance. For a truly global perspective, students in Years 6-8 are invited on an overseas trip to Iceland. Whether preparing for senior school entry or developing inquisitive skills, every boy is supported and challenged to achieve their best in this dynamic and engaging subject.

History

History at The New Beacon is a dynamic and essential subject, designed to connect pupils with their heritage and the significant events that have shaped the world. From the daring exploits of the Vikings to the Norman Conquest that changed the course of history, and from the Roman occupation to the Normandy landings, each topic is brought to life with passion and academic rigor. Using a variety of engaging teaching methods and age-appropriate approaches, lessons are enriched by trips to historic landmarks such as Duxford Imperial War Museum, the Churchill War Rooms, and the Houses of Parliament. A highlight for Year 7 students is the residential trip to France and Belgium, where they explore pivotal moments of WWI.

The curriculum emphasises critical thinking and the ability to construct well-reasoned arguments, equipping boys with vital skills that extend beyond the classroom. By examining history’s triumphs and tragedies, pupils develop a deeper understanding of cultural heritage, the evolution of democracy, and the role of monarchy and governance in shaping society. Through this engaging study of the past, boys gain the knowledge and perspective needed to navigate the future as informed, thoughtful citizens.

Mathematics

Mathematics at The New Beacon is taught as both a life skill and a subject to be enjoyed. Boys are encouraged to appreciate the beauty and logic of mathematics, exploring it as a language and a science to enhance problem-solving abilities and translate written problems into numerical solutions. Beyond preparing boys for a range of exams, including the 11+, pre-assessments, Common Entrance, and scholarships, the department emphasizes the value of mathematics as a lifelong skill. The curriculum nurtures curiosity and collaboration, instilling confidence and satisfaction in reaching solutions.

Boys also participate in various competitions, such as the nationally recognized Primary Maths Challenge and Junior Maths Challenge, which foster teamwork, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving. Events like the biennial “tableathon” and visits from guest speakers further enrich the learning experience. With a balance of traditional values and a forward-thinking approach, the department consistently achieves excellent results, preparing boys not only for academic success but for real-world applications of mathematics.

Music

Music is a vibrant and integral part of life at The New Beacon, fostering a love for creativity and self-expression while nurturing individual talents. Boys from Reception to Year 8 are encouraged to explore and develop their musical abilities through a comprehensive program that combines class music, instrumental lessons, and ensemble participation. With state-of-the-art facilities, including a purpose-built Music and Art Centre and a Mac Suite for composition activities, boys are inspired to engage with music in diverse and innovative ways. From learning to read music notation in the early years to composing soundtracks with Garageband in the Senior School, the curriculum provides a well-rounded foundation for musical growth. The school’s strong tradition of singing includes choirs at every level, with the prestigious Chapel Choir offering opportunities to perform abroad in stunning locations like Rome and Venice.

Approximately 75% of boys learn an instrument, with many joining one of the school’s numerous instrumental groups, such as orchestras, brass bands, and string ensembles. Performances play a central role in showcasing talent, with events ranging from nativities and carol services to full-scale musicals and concerts. Talented musicians are also encouraged to pursue scholarships, with recent successes at esteemed institutions like Eton and Tonbridge School. Through a dynamic and supportive environment, The New Beacon ensures that every boy has the chance to experience the joy and discipline of music, building confidence, creativity, and lifelong skills.

Fitness, Health and Sport

Fitness, Health & Sport at The New Beacon is designed to develop essential skills, promote teamwork, and instill a lifelong love for physical activity in every boy. In the Pre-Prep and Junior School, boys participate in weekly FH&S lessons that focus on ball skills, balance, and coordination in a structured yet enjoyable environment. These sessions introduce young learners to the fundamentals of invasion sports, encouraging safe play while nurturing confidence and discipline. With an emphasis on skill-building, these lessons provide a foundation for more advanced activities as boys progress through the school.

For boys in the Middle and Senior School, FH&S lessons shift focus to indoor sports such as basketball, badminton, cricket, and dodgeball, with more time dedicated to gameplay and strategy. The addition of an all-weather surface enhances the scope of activities, offering opportunities for outdoor skill development in a variety of sports. Core outdoor sports, including football, rugby, hockey, and cricket, form a vital part of the curriculum, with boys regularly competing in matches against other Prep Schools and participating in national tournaments organized by IAPS and sporting associations. This comprehensive approach ensures that every boy enjoys both the physical and social benefits of sport.

Religious Studies

Pre-Prep and Junior School
In the Pre-Prep and Junior School, Religious Education follows the Canterbury scheme of work, introducing boys to a variety of world religions and their unique practices, ways of life, and methods of worship. Beginning with Christianity in Reception through Year 4, the curriculum expands to include Judaism, Hinduism, and Islam as the boys progress. Through collective worship, tied to key events such as Harvest Festival and services in the Chapel, boys explore their own understanding of religion while developing respect and tolerance for the beliefs of others. This balanced approach fosters curiosity and understanding from an early age.

Middle and Senior School
In the Middle and Senior School, Religious Studies takes on a more academic focus, guided by the Common Entrance syllabus. Boys delve into the Old and New Testaments alongside an exploration of Buddhism and Christianity in Year 7 as part of a study on World Religions. The curriculum aims to equip boys with a deeper understanding of religious themes, allowing them to form their own perspectives as they mature. This rigorous preparation ensures boys are ready for Common Entrance and Scholarship exams, with many achieving excellent results by the end of Year 8.

Science

At The New Beacon, science is brought to life through hands-on exploration, fostering curiosity and a love for discovery. Lessons are designed to be practical and engaging, allowing boys to actively experience science by doing, seeing, and even smelling their way to understanding. This immersive approach creates lasting memories, making science accessible and relevant to their everyday lives. Whether hypothesising, planning experiments, or exploring the wonders of the natural world, boys are encouraged to develop critical thinking skills and an appreciation for the role science plays in shaping their surroundings.

Learning extends beyond the school’s state-of-the-art laboratories to outdoor spaces like the Millennium Garden and the newly developed school garden. From Reception through Year 8, boys are inspired to connect with the natural environment and explore science in real-world contexts. Combined with projects, outings, and field trips, this comprehensive approach ensures every boy is excited for the discoveries awaiting them in their next lesson.
